Bowersox retains spot on 'Idol'

Lacey Brown was eliminated last night from American Idol, ensuring another week for Crystal Bowersox to move closer to winning the competition.

With the option to save a contestant from elimination, the judges elected to let the 24-year-old Ms. Brown from Amarillo, Texas, return home and reduce the number of performers to 11.

The other two performers who joined Ms. Brown in the bottom three were fellow Texans Paige Miles, 24, of Houston, and Tim Urban, 20, of Duncanville.

As for Ms. Bowersox, the 24-year-old Ottawa County resident agreed with the judges' assessment that her Tuesday performance of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" wasn't the best she's delivered onstage this season.

She said an emotional film clip of her father, Bill Bowersox, moments before her performance was still in her mind as she took the stage.

"I just saw my dad crying on the tape right before I performed and then you go out there," Ms. Bowersox said. "It's hard. I was thinking about that, among other things."

She also wanted to set the record straight that, despite what others may say about her confidence onstage, she doesn't consider the Idol crown hers to lose.

"I have never thought that for one second," Ms. Bowersox told Idol host Ryan Seacrest, moments before she learned she would return to Idol next week.

"This is definitely up for grabs and could be anybody's competition. When I perform I just do what's natural for me. I'm not being arrogant or anything like that."

Still, there was little drama to her fate, as Ms. Bowersox has proved to be one of the early favorites to win the competition, along with 20-year-old Siobhan Magnus, who uniformly impressed the judges with a theatrical version of "Paint it Black" during American Idol's Rolling Stones theme night.

American Idol and Ms. Bowersox will be back at 8 p.m. Tuesday for a two-hour showcase, followed by the hourlong results show Wednesday night.
