You might think that being fingered during Detroit’s bankruptcy as a deep and pick-able pocket, and wrestling with the city’s emergency manager for control of treasured art was Graham Beal’s biggest career challenge. Certainly, it was no picnic. But it wasn’t the nadir of his extraordinary ride. Nor were the many years the Detroit Institute of Arts faced extinction due to lack of cash. His toughest task was changing culture and reinventing a museum that would build inclusiveness into its staff and exhibits.
