‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ misses its mark
Director Bryan Singer ushered in the cinematic golden age of comics with 2000's X-Men. His trio of X-Men movies are sleek, smart, popcorn entertainment with sly messages about acceptance, and a story built on the characters rather than CGI. With X-Men: Apocalypse, his fourth outing in the series and the franchise’s sixth overall, the filmmaker stumbles mightily, eschewing his disciplined style in this bloated, rambling, and messy wreck of a summer spectacle.
