Winners of the 86th annual Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition were announced during opening ceremonies Friday in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.
Best of show went to graphic artist Kathryn Kain. Metalsmith Thomas Madden and painter Richard Dziak shared first-place awards, and Dziak's work also won the Toledo Federation of Art Societies purchase award. Second-place winners were sculptors Calvin Babich and Kenneth Thompson and painter Stephen Kuzma. Third-place awards went to printmaker Marisa Lilje, painter Leslie Adams, photographer Stevie Grand, and mixed-media artist Catherine Royer.
Specialty winners were Mike Kozumplik and Marvin Thorp (Toledo Area Glass Guild Dominick Labino Memorial); Lou Krueger (Roulet Medal), Peter Draughon (Toledo Friends of Photography), Timothy Brewer (Molly Morpeth Canaday painting award), Barbara Miner (Rose Reder Memorial sculpture award), Jesse Avina (Latin Association for Visual Arts Award), Susan Krueger (Gathering of Quilters Guild), Philip Jackson (Israel Abramofsky Award of Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim), Elizabeth Delatore (Toledo Potters' Guild), and Thomas Lingeman (Toledo Museum of Art Curator's Choice).
Also, the Toledo Federation of Artists, which presents the show, presented its annual award to the Toledo Museum of Art.
The exhibition is to remain on view through July 8 in the Graphic Arts Galleries.
The Ohio State Fair Art Show is seeking submissions from artists 17 years old (as of June 11) and older in most two and three-dimensional media. This year's judges are Sandra Blain, Kay Koeninger, Adrian Tio, and Frank Webb. Awards total $15,000. Deadline for entries is June 11. Sybaris Gallery, 202 East Third St., Royal Oak, Mich., is to open two new shows Thursday. “Garden of Dreams,” a theme-based jewelry exhibition with work by eight metalsmiths, is to share space with sculpture by Diane Simpson. Both shows will run through June in the gallery, where hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
