Let's Face This opens Friday
5/25/200220 North Gallery, 20 North St. Clair St., presents Let's Face This, featured work by artists Andrei Rabodzeenko, of Chicago and Elena Nemkova of Milan, Italy, who is working on her fellowship in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The American Diabetes Association held its Inaugural Celebrity Art Auction Gala on May 18 hosted by SSOE, Inc., in the architectural and engineering firm's headquarters, 1101 Madison Ave. The auction, which raised $40,000 for the diabetes organization, featured collaborative artwork between established local artists and celebrities. Participating artists included John Hejna, Richard Reed, Constandena Mandros, Mike Wallace, and Rachelle Raymer-Gilbert. Celebrities included University of Toledo football coach Tom Amstutz and Tony Packo, Jr., of Tony Packo's Cafe. The highest auction bid went to a watercolor Sept. 11 tribute drawing done by Toledo Fire Chief Michael Bell, under the direction of master watercolorist Aaron Bivins. The piece sold for $3,000. Wesley Memorial Gallery, in the narthex of Wesley United Methodist Church, 1200 Van Buren St., Fostoria, presents an exhibit of artwork created by 19 St. Wendelin High School students under the direction of art teacher Janealla Smalley. Schedel Arboretum and Gardens, 19255 West Portage River South Rd., Elmore, presents its second annual Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition on view June 1 through Oct. 1, with 16 sculptors displaying contemporary works throughout the 17-acre garden setting. Artists include Calvin Babich, Joe Ann Cousino, Emanuel Enriquez, Tom Lingeman, Duane Bastian, Cynthia McLean, and Roger Zielenski. A featured work is a 1991 sculpture of St. Francis by acclaimed artist and sculptor Joseph Sheppard, of Baltimore, Md., and Tuscany, Italy. Ann Arbor Art Center, 117 West Liberty St., Ann Arbor, will offer a three-day workshop June 14-16 with master potter John Glick, recipient of the 2001 Michigan Governors Award for Arts and Culture.
