Area work on view at Ann Arbor fairs

7/18/2003

If you're heading north to the Ann Arbor Art Fairs this weekend, expect to encounter a taste of home.

Area artists are well-represented in this year's fairs, which continue today and tomorrow in the downtown near the University of Michigan campus.

Returning to the State Street Area Art Fair along State, Liberty, Maynard, and William streets are Toledo photographer Robert Hasenfratz and painter Douglas Frosch of Curtice. Also in the show is Toledo glassmaker Ruth Rousseau.

Fiber artist Marcia Derse of Sylvania is showing her work in the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, which has a new location this year around the University of Michigan Burton bell tower on North University, Thayer, and East Washington streets.

Clay artists Steve Roberts of Bowling Green and Ann Tubbs of Ottawa Lake, Mich., also are in the fair.

The largest representation of area artists can be found at the Michigan Guild's Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair along South and East University and Church streets, where photographer Jan Kaulins of Manitou Beach, Mich., is showing his work. Kaulins' wife, Deb LaPlante, a clay artist, is exhibiting her work as well, along with that of her photographer son, Jesse LaPlante.

Also showing at the summer art fair are photographer and digital artist Chris Maher of Lambertville and his wife, Annette Morrin, who makes jewelry.

Other artists from the area in the Michigan Guild fair are painter Laura Barnhardt Corle of Findlay; Toledo jewelry maker Jacquelyn Crissman; Nina Harris of Mount Victory, Ohio, who works in leather; wood artist David A. Ross from Bryan; Sylvania glass artist Mike Rothfuss; clay artist Raye Salveson from Findlay; Toledo glass artist Meredith Wenzel; Toledo painter Michael Woods; painter Wanda Zuchowski-Schick of Rossford; Lynne McNutt of Temperance, who works in two-dimensional mixed media; Monroe artists Sylvia Pixley (printmaking and paper) and Will Stanford (wood), and David Stevens, a folk artist from Hillsdale, Mich.

The Ann Arbor Art Fairs continue today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Ann Arbor. Shuttle buses are available at the Briarwood Mall or Pioneer High School, off I-94's Ann Arbor-Saline Road exit. Organizers recommend starting to view the fairs at State and South University streets.
