Museum plans Africana exhibit
7/31/2008An exhibition of Africana, on loan from the Toledo Zoo, will fill the Toledo Museum of Art's Little Theater Gallery from Aug. 8 to Oct. 5. Objects were collected or created by Carl Akeley, a naturalist, taxidermist, explorer, and artist who gathered African shields, baskets, and personal adornments during his trips to Africa in the early 20th century.
Also in the museum, Tom Loeffler will discuss printmaking techniques, various types of papers, and the quality and condition of prints at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 in the Libbey Court. Loeffler manages the museum's collection of works on paper.
Toledoans Yusuf Lateef and Adam Russell will display their work in the Truth Art Gallery, 1811 Adams St., during August. Lateef blends his love of boxing with art, incorporating found materials such as signs, wood paneling, and doors. A reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7. Gallery hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
It's Open Art Days and Arts in the Garden from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr. All the studios in the artist village will be open, and visitors can try their hand at painting, drawing, pottery, stained glass, photography, and more. Easels will be set throughout the garden for youngsters to use. Artists will sell their work. Entertainment will include 1 and 2 p.m. performances by the Toledo Ballet, music by Herm Loch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and children's musical theater at noon and 3 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
The free Downtown Monroe Fine Arts Fair will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 9 and noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 10. Fifty artists will be joined by downtown merchants displaying their goods, and a children's area will operate. It's a short walk from the River Raisin Jazz Festival in St. Mary's Park. PRIZM Creative Community offers a two-day beginning to intermediate sculpture workshop led by Leo Price. Day sessions will be 10 a.m. to noon, Aug 6 and 13 in the art classroom of Perrysburg High School, 13385 Roachton Rd. Evening sessions will be 6 to 8 p.m., Aug. 7 and 14 in Way Public Library, 101 East Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. Participants will make a small sculpture. Works by a variety of artists will rotate every few weeks at the Hudson Gallery, 5645 North Main St., Sylvania, in a movable show called Revolver, continuing through Aug. 30.
Drawings and paintings by Nannette Sturtevant will be featured at Main Street Art & Glass, 325 Main St., Delta, through August. Sturtevant also teaches beginning drawing classes at the gallery from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
Free tours of the new mural in the Valentine Theatre's Grand Lobby will be offered at noon Wednesdays in August. A theater staff member will be available to answer questions about the 10-by-68-foot oil on canvas that artist Paul Geiger spent five years painting. The mural depicts 47 characters who performed at the Valentine between 1895 and 1917. Reservations are required. Information: 419-242-2787.
