Moder's making icicles again
10/23/2008Steve Moder is accepting a limited number of reservations for his annual glass icicle-making workshops in the scientific glass-blowing laboratory at the University of Toledo, Room 1079 Bowman Oddy building. Participants will make several six-inch glass tapers by heating and twisting glass rods in the flames of table-mounted torches. There's no charge for the two-hour sessions, geared for people 16 and older. The small-group sessions will be at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, Dec. 6, and Dec. 13, and at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 5, 12, 19, and Dec. 3 and 17. Advanced classes will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 7, 21, and Dec. 5.

The 90th annual Toledo Area Artists' Exhibition opens in the Toledo Museum of Art Sunday. The free show of 103 pieces by 88 regional artists continues through Jan. 4. Winners will be announced at museum events tomorrow and Saturday.
Art by people who have Alzheimer's disease is displayed in the Community Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art through Nov. 16. With paintings, photographs, and fabric works, the exhibition was organized by Foundation Park Care Center, the Alzheimer's Association northwest Ohio chapter, and the museum.

Two art talks are slated at Bowling Green State University. "A Case for Design Education in K-12 Art Education" will be discussed at 6 p.m. Monday by Paul Sproll, art educator at the Rhode Island School of Design, in 117 Olscamp Hall. At 6 p.m. Nov. 3, printmaker Karen Kunc from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will speak about her work in Room 1101, Fine Arts Center.

A Comic Creation Workshop led by Anthony Fontana will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and 15, sponsored by the Findlay Art League. Geared toward teens and adults, the workshop will discuss character creation, action and setting, panel and page composition, penciling, and inking. Cost: $75.

The Black Swamp Wood Carvers will show their work expressed in a variety of techniques: scenes carved in relief, boxes and eggs decorated with chip-carved geometric designs, duck decoys, Santas, and figures of all sorts. The work of ceramic artist Bruce Chesser is on display through Nov. 17 at the Monroe County Community College Library. The exhibit is part of the college's visiting artist program. An expert on salt glazing and raku pottery, Chesser specializes in contemporary interpretations of traditional functional ceramics.
