Open Art Days soon to send at Toledo Botanical Garden

Sunday is one of the two remaining Open Art Days at Toledo Botanical Garden. Buildings and studios in the garden's Artists' Village will be open from noon to 4 p.m. and will offer creative activities in stained glass, pottery, photography, painting, drawing, and more, for adults and children. Easels set up throughout the garden will allow children to experiment. Live performances will be given and refreshments will be available for purchase at this free event. The final Open Art Day of the season will be Aug. 2, noon to 4 p.m. The garden is at 5403 Elmer Drive. Information: 419-536-5566.

The 91st Toledo Area Artists' exhibition will open with a 7:30 p.m. ceremony and reception July 10 in the Toledo Museum of Art. A cash bar will be available at 6:30 p.m. This juried competition, open to current and past area residents, features 119 pieces chosen from 619 submissions. Prizes in many categories, totaling $7,750, will be awarded. The show will continue through Aug. 23 in the Canaday Gallery.

Opening the same night with a 6 to 9:30 p.m. reception will be the also-ran show, Salon des Refuss, across Monroe Street from the museum in the Parkwood Gallery, in the offices of the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo. The show, which accepts pieces entered in but not selected for the TAA exhibition, is coordinated by Prizm, an arts organization supporting local artists.

America, America, the current exhibit at the Toledo Artists' Club, is on view through July 24. All paintings are for sale, as are note cards and matted paintings in the club's "bin." The gallery is at Toledo Botanical Garden.

Six women will travel to Tanzania July 6-30 as the second delegation from northwest Ohio to conduct workshops about the arts and women's issues. Participating will be Raja Camille Abdallah Aossey, Alecia Robinson, Anne Pletz, all of Toledo; Shari Densel of Waterville; Ellen Przybylski of Swanton, and from Columbus, LaTreice Branson. Leading the group will be Martin Nagy, executive director of the Arts Council Lake Erie West. More information about the program is at artistsoftanzania.org. The group will select up to 10 young women in Tanzania to come to northwest Ohio in September for 28 days. The program is sponsored by the Great Lakes Consortium for International Training and Development and is funded by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs.

Jennifer Frantz of Perrysburg is among 150 to 200 traditional artisans featured in the Directory of Traditional American Crafts of Early American Life magazine. Frantz submitted images of her painted floor cloths to the magazine's annual competition. Winners, listed in the magazine, are selected from an undisclosed number of entries, said Jeanmarie Andrews, executive editor. Published in Shaker Heights, the bimonthly magazine has a circulation of 90,000.

All Good Things is a new gallery/gift shop selling artwork, cards, soaps, lotions, jams, and jellies in Madonna Hall on the campus of the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania. Items are made by the sisters, their associates, and partners. Grand opening of the shop at 6832 Convent Blvd. in Sylvania will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Athena Art Society's exhibit of 35 paintings keyed off of the Mona Lisa is at the Toledo Heights Library through Sept. 11.

American-made pottery is king at the Pottery Lovers Reunion, July 11-18 in Zanesville. Sold will be both contemporary and vintage pottery from some of Ohio's most famous ceramic factories: Rookwood, Roseville, McCoy, Weller, Hull, Owens, Peters & Reed. Timothy Rub, director and chief executive officer of the Cleveland Museum of Art, has resigned after three years on the job. He's been hired to head the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The CMA expects to begin a search for a new director shortly.
