Area's art lovers have a wealth of upcoming events

Art in the Garden will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Toledo Botanical Garden. Arts, crafts, and food will be sold; art demos and activities for kids will be offered, and musicians will perform from noon to 4 p.m. The garden is at 5403 Elmer Dr. Information: 419-536-5566.

The August Art Walk (or bike) in and around the Warehouse District and the UpTown area will be 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9. Dozens of studios, galleries, and eateries will be open and bicycle taxi service will operate. People are encouraged to note the new artist-designed bike racks on sidewalks in the UpTown area and art benches in the Warehouse District. The final Art Walk of 2012 will be Sept. 13. Call for artists: Imagine your art splashed on a giant electronic billboard, seen by thousands of people. Local individuals or teams working in any media may submit up to three artworks for consideration for this new project, a collaboration between the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and Toledo Detroit Outdoor Media, owner of the billboards. Ad content typically cycles through these giant screens every eight seconds and selected pieces will be added to the loop on two local billboards. The goal is to enhance the city's reputation as a center of creativity and culture. Deadline is Aug. 31. Also, Art-A-Licious in downtown Adrian will be Sept. 21 and 22. Deadline for new applicants is Aug. 10. In its sixth year, the event includes art, food, stage entertainment, and family activities. Applications are at artalicious.org/artists.

Bowling Green's First Friday Gallery Hop will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, showcasing the city's art scene, exhibits, demonstrations, and live music. Participating are Akimbo Gallery, 175 N. The Gionis, Hudson, & Spencer exhibit is at the Parkwood Gallery through Aug. 17, when a closing reception will be 6 to 8 p.m. Using photographic imagery of the past with contemporary images, Tina Gionis explores the passing of time in Toledo and its identity as a mid-size, midwestern city.

Mixed media artist Kendra Hudson creates images of man-made objects growing out of and around natural relics. The porcelain vessels of Elizabeth Spencer indulge in the pleasures of decorating a home, a cake, or the body. The gallery is 1838 Parkwood Ave. at Monroe Street.

Four artists who have painted together both inside and out in recent years will show 10 works each at the Dziak Gallery, opening with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception Aug. 10. Curators at the University of Michigan Museum of Art will discuss recent acquisitions including woodwork and basketry from Korea and China, contemporary wood sculpture and sculptural pottery, Hindu and Buddhist representations of religious icons, and a range of prints at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Detroit Institute of Arts offers free museum admission to any visitor wearing a mustache (real or fake) from Friday to Sunday. Admission is usually $8 for adults, $4 for children. The promotion celebrates the eccentric appearance of Salvador Dali, who sported flamboyant upper-lip hair. Dali's painting, Soft Construction with Boiled Beans, is on view in the DIA's exhibition, Five Spanish Masterpieces. Also this weekend, the Dali Project will be performed. It's a puppet performance exploring Dali's embrace of the subconscious. Adult performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday; a performance for ages 8 and up will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.
