Potter to celebrate 20 years of her gallery, work

Two jars are part of potter Julie A. Beutler's Sticks and Stones series that feature unusual handles.

20 ... from the heart, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Angelwood Gallery and of Julie A. Beutler’s career as an artist, will open with a 6 to 9 p.m. reception April 27 at 24195 Front St., Grand Rapids. More than 200 new pieces of Beutler's pottery will be showcased including a Sticks and Stones series (jars with unusual handles); Homey (small whimsical house sculptures); Sacred Heart (work with winged hearts); Point of Convergence (decorated with slips and shields), and platters. Light and Shadow, 50 works by Art Werger and Tom Marino, will open with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception Saturday in Hudson Gallery, 5645 N. Main St., Sylvania. Werger, a printmaker living in Athens, Ohio, has made multicolored etchings and aquatints. Marino, of Toledo, has fashioned innovative Shino glazed ceramics. The show will be on view through June 1.

Rhymes, Rhythms, and Rhetoric, a poetry reading and open-mic opportunity, will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight in the Way Public Library, 101 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. Leonard Kress of Perrysburg, who has published nine collections of his work and who teaches at Owens Community College, will read his poetry. Launch Pad Cooperative presents ARText, a poet/artist collaboration opening with a 6 to 9 p.m. reception on April 26. It's a cross-disciplinary experiment, randomly pairing one visual artist from Launch Pad Cooperative with an area poet. It aims to push the limits by encouraging creative modes of production that are unfamiliar or uncomfortable. In so doing, ARText's participants hope to unify two relatively disconnected creative communities within the greater Toledo area. Participating artists/poets are Timothy Gaewsky/Andrew Field, Crystal Gale Phelps/Zach Fishel, Julia LaBay/Courtney Fillion, Ian Welch/Carl Dietrich, Hannah Lehmann/Kayla Williams, and Tinola Mayfield-Guerrero/Tara Armstrong. Brenda Baker will lead workshops in the dry-brush technique, a watercolor method that entails multiple layers and often very small brushes. MFA Thesis Exhibition I continues in the Bryan and Wankelman galleries in the Fine Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. Part II opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 26.

The annual juried student art exhibition, including 100 pieces of fine art, photography, and commercial art by 30 students, continues through May 3 in the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township.

Central Catholic’s free Festival of the Lively Arts will be 5 to 7 tonight in the school at 2550 Cherry St. Visual art will be displayed, poetry will be written on sidewalks outside, and piano and dance students will perform. At 7, the music department’s spring concert will be in the school’s Sullivan Center, featuring performances by the Glee Club, Gospel Choir, Mixed Chorus, band, and a preview performance of the upcoming spring musical, Anything Goes. Floral arranger Jim Johnson will design arrangements inspired by paintings at the Detroit Institute of Arts at 10:30 a.m. May 1. He’ll explain each design style, materials used, the mechanics of consruction, and the inspiration for each one. Tickets are $25 for the lecture and demonstration. A lunch that follows costs an additional $25. Johnson is former director of the Benz School of Floral Design. Wassenberg Art Center in Van Wert has received a long-term loan of paintings, prints, and sketches by the late David Humphreys Miller.

Miller, a native of Van Wert, studied the Battle of Little Bighorn from the time he was 16, traveling west, learning five tribal dialects, and interviewing and painting 72 Native American survivors of that battle.

Called the Faces of Little Bighorn, it’s the only permanent collection of Miller’s work in the United States and is valued at nearly $1 million. It will be on view later this year in the center’s new location, the Van Wert Armory, still being renovated. An interactive Web Site is being developed. Miller wrote Custer’s Fall: The Indian Side of the Story, and acted in and consulted on several movies including Stagecoach and How the West was Won.
