Show to open at gallery in Marblehead
5/9/2013The Ferguson Gallery in Marblehead will open a show of 40 paintings by Lori Roberts-Cobbledick, Rick Dziak, Debbie Prue, and Cary Ferguson on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is at 5890 East Harbor Rd. Do you love old photographs or have 19th century photos that are undated? A free, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday workshop, Windows on the Past: Identifying and Dating 19th-Century Photographs, will be in the McMaster Center of the Main Library, 325 Michigan St.
Diane Gagel, a professional genealogist, author, and past president of the Ohio Genealogical Society, will provide tips for dating old images using information about the photographer, props, and fashion. LeSo Gallery, 1527 Starr Ave., will host Persistence, with drawings by Laura Makar, an intuitive composer of emotion and imagery, and the paintings of Matt Wolcott, a pop expressionist whose bold colors and strokes strike a balance between unity and diversity. The opening reception will be 7 to 9 p.m. May 25 in the gallery and the show will continue through June 8, when a 7 to 9 p.m. reception featuring conversations with the artists will be held. Artomatic 419! drew a record 12,000 visitors to see, watch, and listen to the creativity of 600 people in a near-downtown warehouse three Saturdays in April. Returning in 2015, the biennial event is organized by the Arts Commission.

Launch Pad Cooperative, a downtown gallery, will restructure, focusing on associate memberships and curatorial opportunities. After its successful first year in Toledo, the cooperative will accept six associate members for next year. Potential candidates should have a cohesive body of work, a strong studio practice, and a high degree of professionalism. They will not pay fees and will be able to have their work shown and to co-curate an exhibit, have access to each other’s networks, and participate in exchange shows with other cooperatives around the country. Calls for artists: It’s outdoor festival season and there are still spots available for artists to sell their wares, as well as opportunities to exhibit at indoor galleries
● The Wood County Invitational Art Show, Sept. 7-8, is open to people living within 30 miles of Bowling Green and is part of the Black Swamp Arts Festival. Deadline is June 1. Application fee is $15; booth fee is $130. Also sought for this popular festival are people to demonstrate in the Artists at Work area, who will create on site. Wanted are people who are skilled at turning raw materials into art while explaining what they’re doing, from glass-bead makers and potters to watercolorists, painters, sculptors and others. ● The Northwest Ohio Open Summer Art Show is a nonjuried exhibit providing regional artists a chance to display in a professional gallery setting.

● People may sell their work June 8 in Peddlers Alley in Waterville (fee: $25), as part of Art and About in Waterville. Those who register by May 28 will receive gifts from the Waterville Area Arts Council. From June 6-8, artists will paint outdoors (known as “plein air” painting) at several scenic and historic locations, and the public will be able to watch painters in action.
