'We Pray,' an oil painting by Navy veteran Kristen Dukat, is part of the 'Visions of Freedom' exhibit at the Way Public Library.

  • An exhibit of veterans’ work will open at 2 p.m. Sunday, with a reception at Way Library’s gallery, 101 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg.

Visions of Freedom was organized by the nonprofit PRIZM Creative Community and is the third such event, which is held biennially. It remains on display through Jan. 5.

The show includes visual and literary pieces created by retired military personnel, as well as pieces provided by family members of veterans. Visions of Freedom also includes memorabilia of veterans from the different military branches and a display that includes an empty table setting symbolic of those imprisoned, missing, or fallen service members not attending Veterans Day observances and other gatherings.

U.S. Army retired Col. Chip Tansill, the director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, will be the keynote speaker at the opening reception. Evie Van Vorhis, 8, of Bowling Green, will sing the national anthem to kick off the event.

For more information, go to waylibrary.info or myprizm.com, or call the library at 419-874-3135 for hours.

    ■ A juried exhibition of five dozen pieces by Ohio artists, including work from at least five local artists, opens today in the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery in Columbus.

Artists Leslie Adams, Jordan Buschur, Arturo Rodriguez, Lynn Whitney, and Matt Paskiet were chosen by jurors from more than 300 applications to participate in the biennial event. The jurors include University of Toledo art professor Dan Hernandez.

Organizers are hosting an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. today. The show closes Jan. 6.

Adams is one of eight artists who will give talks about their careers. She is scheduled to speak at noon Nov. 9.

The Riffe Gallery is in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, 77 S. High St.

    ■ Local artist Paul Brand is offering a weekly painting class for the public at the Toledo Artists Club, which is at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Drive.

The workshop-style classes allow students to work in watercolors, acrylics, or pastels. They are 2-4 p.m. every Tuesday. Participants pay $20 per session, and can come to as many or as few as they would like. Experience is not necessary, Brand said.

    ■ A student exhibition that shows the study of color is on display at the Wolfe Gallery at Maumee Valley Country Day School, 1715 S. Reynolds Road, through Dec. 15.

Color Kaleidoscope features the work of MVCDS students from junior kindergarten through 12th grade. Groups of grade levels focused on different media to show how artists use color schemes to set moods, and use natural materials to create pigments.

There will be a reception highlighting the students’ work from 3-4 p.m. Dec. 8.
