Sylvania art walk highlights 'Group of Nine'

  • Friday’s art walk in downtown Sylvania includes an annual exhibition of art by nine local artists.

    Group of Nine opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hudson Gallery, 5645 N. Main St. It’s the 11th year for the show, which this year features a variety of media, including painting, metal work, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and photography.

    Participating artists are James Dickerson, Jane Williams, Michelle Arnold Paine, Andrew Gilliatt, Aaron Pickens, Hans Ruebel, Kelly Brown, John McLaughlin, and Jim Yarrito.

    The show will remain up through March 31. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. 

    The Red Bird Arts Walk in downtown Sylvania occurs the first Friday of every month, and provides the community with art shows, sales, live entertainment, and food and drink. It runs from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information about this month’s activities, go to redbirdarts.org.

    ■ An art show featuring the work of artists 50 and older is open through March 28 at the Wood County Senior Center.

    50+ Shades of Grey is a compilation of 2-D art by older, local artists.

    Carole Kauber won the People’s Choice Award for her piece at a reception Friday.

    ■ The Toledo Artists’ Club has classes and shows coming up this month:

    In collaboration with the club, Steve Stalker of the Photo Arts Club will host a workshop on how to mat, frame, and mount art, including acrylic, oil, photography, and pastel pieces. Participants should bring one piece up to 8-by-10 inches to be matted. The class will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 20, at the artists club at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Drive.     The Toledo Potters’ Guild is offering pottery and clay classes for adults and children that start the week of March 26. The course is 10 weeks long and meets once a week, with adult classes on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings, and children on Wednesdays.     The monthly art show at Toledo Artists’ Club focuses on abstract art in March. Awards have already been given to: best of show, Doris Mathias for Commanding Color; first place, Julie Draeger for The Urn; second place, Claire Wilson for Across the Board; third place, Carol Sicha for Virtuoso, and honorable mentions to Draeger, Mathias, and John Trumbull.     ■ In conjunction with the exhibition, The Mummies: From Egypt to Toledo, visitors to the Toledo Museum of Art can also see mummy movies every Saturday through May 5, and attend mummy-themed flashlight tours.

    A different movie is shown at 2 p.m. every Saturday in the Little Theater. Admission is free to members and $5 for nonmembers.

    Guests also have a chance to participate in Flashlight Tours: Mummies by Moo-Light, March 8-10. The after-hours tours, which are docent-led, are touted as family friendly and include milk and cookies. Times vary.

    ■ An exhibition of work by former White House photographer Amanda Lucidon has been extended through the month of March in Toledo.

    Lucidon worked for the Barack Obama administration from 2013 until President Obama left office, as a photographer to former First Lady Michelle Obama. An exhibition of her work and her book, Chasing Light: Michelle Obama Through the Lens of a White House Photographer, was featured as part of a Black History Month special event at the Toledo Lucas County Library’s downtown location.

    That photography show will move to the Sanger Branch, 3030 Central Ave., for this month, according to library staff. Lucidon spoke about her work Wednesday night at the main library.

    ■ The Marathon Center for the Arts, 200 W. Main Cross St., Findlay is hosting watercolor classes at 2 p.m. March 8, and at 7 p.m. March 15.
