Photography center to undergo renovations
2/24/2014The National Center for Nature Photography is closed for several months for extensive renovations.
When it reopens in September, the center will have additional gallery space and a new classroom. The center’s Secor Room will get a new patio and kitchen facilities. The building’s exterior will make use of landscaping and educational displays to orient visitors to the Oak Openings region, where the metropark is located.
The building also will serve as a gateway to the Oak Openings Greenway that eventually will connect with Oak Openings Preserve Metropark in Swanton. The park system has been acquiring land for more than a decade to connect the two parks, preserving a natural corridor and creating more parkland for public use.
The photo center opened 11 years ago in a former nature center built in the 1950s. It has a gallery displaying the work of local, regional, and national photographers. It also holds educational workshops and lectures.
