Chrysler's Toledo workers OK 4-year contract
10/25/2011Hourly workers at Chrysler Group LLC's Toledo Assembly Complex have voted to approve a new four-year contract with the automaker, officials with United Auto Workers Local 12 said.
In voting Monday, Toledo Assembly workers approved the contract by 54 percent to 46 percent, Jeep Unit chairman Dan Henneman said. The vote marks the first time that workers at Toledo, who had previously maintained their own separate agreement, have cast a ballot on a national contract with their employer since Chrysler purchased the former American Motors Corp. and the Jeep brand in 1987.
"It's not a great contract, but it's a good contract in tough economic times," Mr. Henneman said, adding that workers' pay was protected and there was some extra money, especially for second-tier workers. "Mostly though it's about putting product in the plant, and I think this helps secure our plant's long-term future."
Nationwide results of the Chrysler vote are due to be reported by the UAW later Tuesday.
