WASHINGTON — Chrysler Group LLC will recall about 4,200 cars and pickups in the United States and 1,400 in Canada because the 8-speed automatic transmission could fail; in a separate action, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating if a Hyundai recall earlier this year should have covered more vehicles.

The Chrysler recall affects some 2013 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine, either all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, and the 8-speed automatic transmission, according to a report the automaker filed with the safety agency.

The Hyundai inquiry concerns a recall issued in March of 186,000 Elantras from the 2011-13 model years because a side curtain air bag, if deployed in a crash, could propel a metal support bracket from the headliner into an occupant, possibly causing a head injury.

The agency said it learned the 2009-12 Elantra Touring models seem to have used a design similar to the recalled vehicles.
