FLINT, Mich. — General Motors Co. executives and city officials gathered Monday for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site of a planned $600 million paint shop project at the Flint Assembly plant.

GM says the new shop will allow use of improved sealers and coatings that increase corrosion resistance. The automaker says the plant will send 90 percent less paint sludge to landfills, use 20 percent less natural gas, and 40 percent less electricity.

The Flint Journal says construction on the 596,000-square-foot project will start in the second quarter of this year, with the paint shop beginning operation in October, 2016.
