Coach: Derek Kidwell, first year
Last season: 0-10, 0-7 NBC
Returning letter winners: 7
Returning starters: Offense 4, defense 3
Schemes: Speed/4-4
Top players: Senior Alex Navarro, 5-10, 205, DL/LB. Junior Cordaro Diaz, 5-9, 160, RB/LB. Sophomores Ryan Phillips, 5-10, 160, RB/LB; Jayden Stanton, 5-11, 155, QB/LB.
Outlook: Kidwell returns to his alma mater hoping to restore the program's glory. Kidwell, whose last stop was at Fremont Ross, was a Redmen quarterback under his father, Dick Kidwell. He helped Fostoria to a 1989 state runner-up finish, a state-semifinal run in 1990, and a 1991 state championship (all in Division II).
But the Redmen have fallen on hard times, going 0-10 in each of the last two seasons. They are trying to emerge from a 23-game losing streak.
Kidwell inherits 40 varsity players with just five seniors.
He said the coaching staff is working hard put a winning product back on the field, and some pride back in the community.
“We want to give them something to be excited about on Friday nights,” he said.
But there is a lack of experience along with players learning a new system on both sides of the ball.
“We are very young and inexperienced. Lack of depth could be an issue,” Kidwell said.
