Neuendorf to be Ottawa Hills football coach
3/20/2014Ottawa Hills has hired Gregory Neuendorf to be its football coach.
Neuendorf, a Southview graduate, becomes the 12th head coach in the school history.
His experience includes serving as a high school head coach in Maryland and North Carolina. His most recent stint took place at Porter Ridge in Indian Trail, N.C., in 2013. He was the head coach at Cox Mill in Concord, N.C., from 2009-13, and at Winston Church in Potomac, Md., from 2006-09. He was an assistant at Hilliard Davidson from 2002-06.
Neuendorf has a career record of 41-39.
The Sylvania native played quarterback at Southview and in college at Denison before completing his undergraduate and master’s in education degree at Ohio State.
Neuendorf, who will teach physical education at Ottawa Hills, fills the vacancy that came with the retirement of coach Chris Hardman.
In 16 seasons, Hardman had a record of 74-91 overall, 53-31 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. His teams won three TAAC titles and made four playoff appearances.
Hardman remains as baseball coach.
PC’s Diels retires
Port Clinton boys basketball coach Troy Diels retired at the end of the season.
The Redskins finished 26-1 and were Division II state runners-up in 2010, losing to Dayton Dunbar 64-50.
"Coach Diels has been a positive influence in the lives of our student-athletes and has made major contributions to our boys basketball program," Port Clinton principal Gary Steyer said. "We appreciate what he has meant to our students and how he has supported them throughout their basketball careers, as well as their personal lives."
During Diels' tenure, the Redskins claimed a Sandusky Bay Conference championship, three sectional championships, a district title and a regional title. His career record is 108-90.
"I have decided that it is time to step down as head coach," he said. "There are a lot of little factors as to why, but above all I think the time is right for a change.
"I consider it an honor and a privilege to have been the head coach at Port Clinton and I will forever cherish the bonds that I have with my former players, as well as my coaching staff."
He will continue serving as an assistant principal at Port Clinton Middle School.
Schmeltz sets marks
Eastwood’s Jake Schmeltz finished off a stellar four-year basketball career by setting team records.
Schmeltz had 1,230 career points (second all-time), owns the single-game records for free throws made (16), single-season records for 3-pointers made (54) and for free throws made (311). He also became the career leader for 3-pointers made (151), free throws made (311), and career assists (308).
He was the third leading scorer in the Northern Buckeye Conference this season, averaging 20.0 points per game.
Stritch seeks coaches
Cardinal Stritch will be looking for basketball coaches for boys and girls teams.
David Rieker stepped down after four years (37-53) with the boys team.
John Free held the girls post on an interim basis last season.
Stritch athletic director Craig Meinzer said he's is taking applications until April 13 and hopes to have the positions filled by the middle of May.
