Perrysburg girls, Southview boys win NLL track championships

Jackets repeat; Cougars take 4th straight title

Southview and Perrysburg have recently ruled track and field in the Northern Lakes League their own particular way.

The Cougars’ boys more so than the Yellow Jackets’ girls, yet both continued to have a dominating presence during the NLL meet Friday at Maumee.

Southview, led by seniors Malcolm Johnson and J.J. Pinckney, claimed a fourth straight NLL boys team championship.

Perrysburg, paced by seniors Courtney Clody and Taylor Monheim, repeated as NLL girls team champions.

Johnson won the 100-meter (10.71 seconds) and 200-meter (22.12) titles for an impressive fourth straight year to help the Cougars tally 174 points. Springfield finished a distant second with 106 points, followed by Anthony Wayne (91), Perrysburg (85), Northview (66), Bowling Green (59), Napoleon (43), and Maumee (37).

“This is a pretty special night, this is four in a row with this group,” Southview boys track coach Lee Boyer said. “I knew when they came in as freshmen they were a special group. They’ve done nothing but impress me over the last four years. They capped it off with their fourth league championship.

“I’m real proud of them.”

Perrysburg won the girls title with 153 points, followed by Bowling Green (107½), Southview (89), Anthony Wayne (72), Napoleon (70½), Springfield (69), Northview (67), and Maumee (34).

“We’re very pleased because it’s hard to repeat,” Perrysburg girls coach Andrea Monheim said. “It was a good team effort.”

Pinckney delivered by scoring individual victories for the Cougars in the long jump and 400. He repeated as league champion in both, recording a winning jump of 22 feet, 3¾ inches in the long jump and posting a time of 49.26 seconds to win the 400.

“We work really hard, and we only expect the best, and our coaches only expect the best from us,” Pinckney said. “We just go out and give 100 percent.”

Southview sophomore Frank Hayes also scored a pair of wins, taking first in the 800 and 1600. He raced to a winning time of 1 minute, 59.2 seconds for the 800 and crossed the finish line first in the 1600 with a time of 4:30.33.

Southview’s Berry Grant claimed the shot put with a toss of 52-¼ while teammate Leon Eggleston won the discus with a throw traveling 147-11. The Cougars’ Nick Goatley cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault.

The Cougars also placed first in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 relays on their way to the league title.

Perrysburg’s Brandon Lowery dashed to victory in the 110-meter hurdles, recording a time of 15.32. Northview’s Adam Downing won the 300 hurdles (39.18).

Maumee’s Zak Kirk pulled away from Springfield’s Kyle Shively during the final lap of the 3200 to become a league champion. Kirk won with a time of 9:54.89, and Shively was second (10:02.57).

Southview’s Frank Hayes won the 1600 in 4 minutes, 30.33 seconds. He also won the 800 in 1:59.2.

Springfield’s Manny Durden didn’t have any problem capturning the high jump title. He won with a leap of 6-6 and was the only jumper to even attempt a height of at least 6 feet.

In the girls competition, Clody pulled off a pair of individual victories in her final league meet, winning the 1600 with a meet-record time of 5:04.09 — the old mark was 5:05.9 set in 2001 by Northview’s Stephanie Ray. Monheim ran second with a time of 5:09.96.

Clody and Monheim separated from the 1600 field early in the race and never looked back as Perrysburg swept the top two spots. Clody turned in a meet-record time of 5:04.09.

Clody posted a time of 2:20.78 to win the 800, with teammate Alexis Kemp finishing second (2:21.72).

“It’s bittersweet because I love my team so much,” said Clody, reflecting on her last NLL meet. “I just wanted to go out happy with my performances, and I’m so proud of my team.”

Monheim returned to the track to win the 3200 (11:14.46).

“It’s awesome to go off on this note, and everyone contributed,” Taylor Monheim said of the Yellow Jackets’ second straight team title.

Perrysburg’s 1600 and 3200 relays were also victorious with times of 4:07.63 and 9:17.97, respectively.

Southview sophomore Alana Johnson, who is Malcolm’s sister, also scored 100 (12.63) and 200 (26.58) victories.

Napoleon’s Peyton Lee turned in a winning time of 15.48 for the 100 hurdles.

Southview’s Taylor Fitchpatric won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.85.

Southview’s Chelsey Barwiler won the 400 in 59.45.

Northview’s Alysha Welch won the high jump by clearing 5-2, and teammate Halie Morris took second at 5-0.

AW’s Madison Pollard won in the shot put with a heave of 37-11½.

Perrysburg’s Gabrielle Jett took the discus title with a throw measuring 111-9.

BG’s Maria Horrigan collected two league championships. She topped scaled 11-6 in the pole vault and won the long jump with an effort measuring 16-¾.
