BG hires Vandiver for basketball staff

BOWLING GREEN - Shaun Vandiver, a former first-round NBA draft choice of the Golden State Warriors, has been hired as an assistant basketball coach at Bowling Green State University.

Vandiver, 35, joins BG after spending one year as a graduate assistant at Wyoming and one year at his alma mater, Colorado, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2001-02 season while he was completing his bachelor's degree in sociology.

As a player, Vandiver earned Big 8 Newcomer of the Year his first season and was named first team All-Big 8 Conference for the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. He ranks No. 2 in Colorado school history in career rebounds (962) and No. 3 in career scoring (1,876).

As a freshman in 1988, he helped lead Hutchinson Community College to the NJCAA national title.

Golden State made Vandiver, 35, a native of Bolingbrook, Ill., the 25th overall pick in the 1991 draft. He played nine years of professional basketball in Italy and Spain.
