BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University athletic department announced today that it will establish a diving program for the 2014-15 women’s swimming team.

The idea behind bringing back diving, which was discontinued after the 2008-09 season, is to give the program a better chance to compete for a MAC championship as well as to expand opportunities for female athletes.

“Head coach Petra Martin has developed a championship caliber program and deserves the resources necessary for reaching our goal of winning a MAC championship,” BG director of athletics Chris Kingston said in a release. “Petra is a results-oriented leader who demands excellence in the classroom as well as the pool. The combination of the team’s cumulative GPA of 3.42 and the competitive improvements over the past few seasons has not gone unnoticed.

“We are pleased to have divers join the talented young ladies who currently swim for Falcon athletics and look forward to their future achievements at both the MAC and NCAA Championships.”

Martin, who enters her fourth season with the program, led the Falcons to a third-place finish at last year’s MAC championships. The team placed eighth two years ago, and the program had not finished as high as third since 2004.
