Bowling Green falls in overtime to Minnesota State

BOWLING GREEN — Minnesota State’s Bryce Gervais scored at the 1:30 mark of overtime Saturday to give the Mavericks a 3-2 win over the Bowling Green State University hockey team at the BG Ice Arena.

The game was the second straight overtime game between the two teams over the weekend, and third in a row this season.

The Falcons fell to 6-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota State, the preseason pick to win the WCHA, is 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.

The Falcons controlled play in the first period, outshooting the Mavericks 13-6 and scoring both of their goals. Mike Sullivan netted a power-play goal at 13:21 of the period to take the lead, and Mark Cooper scored his fourth goal of the series at 16:03 of the period.

But Minnesota State started to come back with a second-period goal as Matt Leitner scored on the power play at 16:38.

The Mavericks tied the game at the 8:40 mark of the final period when J.P. Lafontaine scored on the power play, setting the stage for the game-winning goal by Gervais.

Bowling Green’s Tomas Sholl finished with 30 saves.
