BGSU men slip against Akron 57-47

2nd-half surge helps Zips sink Bowling Green

AKRON — The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team suffered a 57-47 loss to Akron on Saturday.

The Falcons were outscored 15-2 over a seven-minute span in the middle of the second period and lost for the sixth time in the last eight games.

Richaun Holmes finished with 14 points to lead three players in double figures for Bowling Green (12-17, 6-10 Mid-American Conference).

Spencer Parker scored 12 points, including 10 in the second half, while Cameron Black had 10 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season.

Demetrius Treadwell scored 17 points, 15 coming in the second half, to lead Akron (18-11, 10-6), which also got 13 from Quincy Diggs.

The Zips scored the first seven points of the contest, but BG was able to quickly work its way back into the game, and Jehvon Clarke’s basket with 10:30 left in the period gave the Falcons a 10-9 lead.

Akron’s Diggs and Nyles Evans made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Zips an 18-12 with 6:05 left in the period, but Bowling Green scored the final six points of the half to cut its deficit to 20-18.

Akron scored the first five points of the second half and and eventually built a 31-23 lead in the first four minutes of the period. But a 3-pointer by Clarke started a 9-1 run for the Falcons, and Clarke’s layup with 12:22 to play tied the game at 32-all.

The two teams traded baskets before Treadwell’s layup at 11:03 started a 9-0 run for the Zips over the next four minutes.

Black’s layup stopped that run, but Akron then scored the next six points, and the Falcons came no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Zips took advantage of good 3-point shooting to claim the win, making 7-of-15 shots from behind the arc (46.7 percent) while Bowling Green made just 2-of-13 3-pointers (15.4 percent).

The play of Black and Holmes allowed the Falcons to have the better performance inside as Bowling Green outrebounded the Zips 39-35 and finished with a 7-1 advantage in blocked shots.

Black had 11 rebounds and Holmes nine, while Holmes blocked four shots and Black swatted three.

Yet Bowling Green was hampered by 20 turnovers while Akron had just 11.
