Ex-BGSU coach Miller resigns at Indiana
Personal reasons, health cited as causes to leave
7/26/2014BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Curt Miller, who coached women's basketball at Bowling Green State University for 11 seasons, has resigned as women's basketball coach at Indiana.
“I have decided to resign as Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball Program, effective immediately, for personal and health reasons,” Miller wrote in his resignation letter, which was posted Friday to the Indiana athletics Web site. “As you know, this was a most difficult decision, but the right one for me and my family at this time.”
On his Twitter account, @CurtMillerIUWBB, he wrote four words: “Thank You Hoosier Nation.”
Indiana announced Miller's resignation Friday morning, and a school release said he will retain his position through the end of the month.
Curtis Loyd, Indiana's associate head coach, will serve as interim head coach.
“Curt Miller did an incredible job coaching this team, bringing us farther, faster than anyone could have reasonably expected,” Indiana athletic director Fred Glass said in a statement. “He leaves the program in a very strong position and poised for much greater success. I respect his decision to resign, and I wish him well. The search for a permanent successor has already begun.”
Miller, 55, left Bowling Green for Indiana in March of 2012, less than two months after he suffered a mild stroke during a game against Eastern Michigan. Miller took a two-week leave of absence and Jennifer Roos, who at the time was an associate head coach for the Falcons, took over as acting head coach.
Roos replaced Miller as the Falcons head coach in April of 2012.
A Bowling Green spokesman said Friday that Roos was traveling for recruiting, but she released a statement through the athletic department.
“Curt and the Indiana University staff are my mentors, colleagues, and friends,” Roos said. “The entire BGSU community values the work Curt did during his time at Bowling Green. He is very passionate about his love for basketball, yet his health and family are priorities that take precedence over basketball.”
Miller was 32-32 in two seasons at Indiana, as he took over a program that was 6-24 in the 2011-12 season. The Hoosiers won 11 games in his first season at Bloomington, then went 21-13 in 2013-14 and earned the school’s first postseason berth in five years, as the Hoosiers won three WNIT games.
Miller compiled a 258-92 record at BGSU, which included a 135-41 mark in Mid-American Conference play. BGSU won eight straight MAC division titles.
Miller has a career coaching record of 290-124.
