Toledo area golfers raise funds, and fun

6/22/2000

Tis the season . . . to golf and putt around, many times in the name of charity:

The Babe Zaharias Golf Classic, a two-day event including 18 and 9-hole scrambles, was June 12 and 16 at Heather Downs Country Club. The late Babe, noted as one of the greatest women athletes in history and co-founder of the LPGA, died of cancer in 1956. Five teams of 18-hole winners will compete in the American Cancer Society State Championship on September 9 at Firestone Country Club in Akron. Chairman Mona Melanko reports a $40,000 net, higher than 1999, with 264 players.

A PRO-AM Golf Tournament to benefit Toledo Children's Hospital was at Stone Oak Country Club, with 44 foursomes led by 44 pros on Monday. The event, in its 10th year, was founded by Warren Underhill, John Jasinski, Eric Nordstrom, and Dick Liden, chairman of the event. After the tournament folks gathered in the sunny backyard of Dick and Alliene Liden's home. The event's net was nearly $35,000.

THE 14TH ANNUAL Roy Croy Golf Tournament and Bar-B-Q was last Saturday at Tanglewood Golf Course, followed by a bash at Paul Croy's home, with music by Lori Swyers & the Red Fox Blues Band with Blind Bobby Smith. Proceeds of $1,000 went to the GAP Foundation, a non-profit organization to bridge the gap between reality and the dreams of those in need.

THE GOODWILL Golf Classic June 9 at Whiteford Valley Golf Course raised $2,000, and a lot of fun.

HIGHLAND MEADOWS Golf Club is an official site in the national Rally for the Cure, the women's golf program to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Touted as the world's largest grassroot's women's golf program, in 1999 it comprised some 2,100 clubs and 100,000 participants. The Highland Meadows Lady Classic June 11, with 66 ladies divided into flight-level threesomes, did a grand slam with a net of more than $2,700, including $1,000 raised from the team drawing party and white elephant sale.

Chairman was Paula Amberg.

SWINGING FOR Smiles: Golfers at the Dental Center golf outing June 14 at Riverby Hills Golf Course raised approximately $16,000. Chairmen were Kim Darr and Mark Kruse.

NOTRE DAME Academy stroked more than $19,000 net from the "Swing for an Eagle" golf outing June 8 at Whiteford Valley Golf Club

THE MOM'S HOUSE golf outing at the Legacy last month yielded $23,000 thanks to chairman Bill Sheehan, the committee, participants, and sponsors.
