Around Town: Scouts say thanks to volunteer

DOING for others is what volunteerism is all about, yet it is nice to be recognized for one's efforts. Camp Miakonda DeVilbiss Scout Reservation in Sylvania was the setting for the 88th Scouter Recognition Dinner presented June 5 by the Erie Shores Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Guests strolled into the woods for a cookout followed by the awards ceremony at the outdoor Council Ring. The night was to honor adult volunteer Scouters for their time and talent in working with the youth of northwest Ohio.

The Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor bestowed on an adult volunteer, for service of exceptional character to youth both in and out of Scouting, was presented to David Dean of Oregon, Allen Ellett of Sylvania, Gary Harden of Swanton, Lee Schultz of Holland; Eric Timm of Perrysburg, and David Wilson of Bowling Green.

Sonya Whitehead of Maumee, the 2014 recipient of the national Woods Services Award for exceptional service and leadership in the field of Scouts with disabilities, was recognized. She received the award during the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, annual meeting in May.

The District Award of Merit for outstanding service at a district level was presented to Michelle McVicker, Taia Sutherland, Lee Anna Bornt, and Todd Frendt of Lucas County; Kenn Bower of Sandusky County; Jeffrey Smarkel of Ottawa County, and Joan Cornell, Shawn Benjamin, and James Wilson of Wood County.

Charles Horne, Jr., of Green Springs, Ohio, was honored with the John C. Haar Lifetime Volunteer Service Award and Frank Merritt of Toledo was presented with the Glenda M. Bowman Lifetime Inspirational Award.

THE Ovarian Cancer Connection hosted its annual Ovarian Cancer Survivor Luncheon this spring at Premier Catering & Banquet Hall. I was one of the guests, a thankful survivor.

Not much is said about ovarian cancer, and very rarely do we see symptoms listed to catch it early or healthy tips to possibly prevent the cancer. We hope to change that by getting the word out: get your annual checkups, pay attention to your body, and notice abnormal signs — it may save your life.

A few upcoming fund-raisers include:

■ The ninth annual Karen Creque Golf Memorial is 9 a.m. Sunday at the Legacy Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Mich. The cost of $85 per person includes golf, cart, lunch, and dinner, or $20 per person for dinner, which includes a silent auction and raffles. Registrations also are available on event day at 8 a.m. All proceeds will stay in our community for financial support to women in treatment for ovarian cancer.

■ The Ellen Jackson Ovarian Cancer Walk sponsored by Buckeye CableSystem is Sept. 20 at the Eleanor Dana Cancer Center on the campus of the University of Toledo Medical Center. THERE are several golf events for charity yet this month:

■ THE seventh annual Golf for Heartbeat is 8 a.m. Saturday at Bedford Hills Golf Club.

The $85 fee includes golf, the cart, lunch, and two drink tickets. Prizes include closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, and more including a $10,000 hole-in-one prize. For information call 419-241-9131, email info@heartbeatoftoledo.org, or go to heartbeatoftoledo.org/events.html.

■ THE Savage Foundation Golf Classic is 11 a.m. Monday at Stone Oak Country Club. It features golf, cart, lunch, and a cocktail party, a raffle, a silent auction, and golf prizes including a Jeep Cherokee for a hole-in-one. The fee is $1,800 per team. ■ IAN'S Memorial Tournament is 9 a.m. June 29 at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Elmore for a scholarship fund for an Ohio State University-bound student with an interest in the study abroad program. The tournament is named for Ian Huffman, who died in 2010 in an automobile accident. Ian was the son of John and Maureen Huffman. The fee of $75 in advance, $80 the day of, includes golf, cart, and a steak dinner. For information call 419-242-8461.
