ON THE TOWN: Area‘s summer parties and events move outdoors

THE 49th Crosby Festival of the Arts, a Toledo Botanical Garden event presented by The Anderson's was June 28 and 29, however, those in the know attended the Gala Preview Party June 27 so they could get first dibs on national and regional art for sale.
The gala, attended by about 700 supporters who paid $75 each, netted about nearly $30,000.
Greeting everyone at the preview were Karen Fraker, board president, and Karen Ranney Wolkins, executive director. Music by Tim Oehlers, Don Thomas, and Distant Cousinz filled the air as party-goers roamed the art booths, that is, after they sipped cocktails including the signature Crosby Mule from the cash cash bar, and nibbled food by Nazareth Hall under a giant clear tent tucked into the gardens. Booths featured ceramic, glass, paintings, jewelry, photography, mixed media, wood, sculpture, garden art, and more -- it was all enticing.

TOLEDO Club's Steak-Out "Under the Summer Sky" June 26 in the parking lot was a popular event with more than 100 members and guests who enjoyed the laid back evening on the perfect weather night. Ronn Daniels‘ acoustics on guitar were just enough background music to set the scene as everyone mingled over cocktails. Ribeye, porterhouse, strip or filet steaks, pork, or chicken were grilled to order. The meal also included summer salads and vegetables, corn-on-the cob, a baked potato bar, and a dessert buffet.
THE U.S COAST Guard Auxiliary celebrated its 75th anniversary June 21 with a formal dinner at Toledo Yacht Club presented by 9CR Division 16, Toledo. More than 50 attendees from Toledo to Defiance to Cleveland and Michigan, too, gathered for the celebration.
The National Anthem was sung by Kimberlee Wioland and “Semper Paratus (always prepared),” the official Coast Guard marching song, was sung by Sandy Bodenmiller, both young ladies of Point Place. Guest speakers were Director of Auxiliary Paul Barlow and Commodore Llorens Chenevert.
The day also included a helicopter SAR demonstration with USCG Station Toledo and the boat crew aboard their 45' coast guard rescue boat; The Maritime Academy new simulators and radar equipment; the USCG Station Toledo open house and a ceremony to honor members of the USCG and USCG Auxiliary who have passed over the bar. Bravo! to event chairman Linda Fairchild who was assisted by co-chairmen Ed Fairchild and Tami Wioland.
IN Another Garden: Growing Places, a tour of eight home gardens, was June 21 in historic downtown Maumee. The 19th annual event, hosted by Friends of the Toledo Day Nursery, netted $24,500. The proceeds help provide children of working and student parents with affordable child care. Underwriters included The Andersons, Hylant Group, Schmitz Family Foundation, Paramount Advantage, Melissa Utterback/Danberry and JL Mechanical.
A preview party attended by 100 some supporters was June 19 at Toledo Country Club. Zach Ottenstein, TDN board chairman, thanked everyone. Honored were 2014 garden owners: Bob and Yvonne Andrzejak, Doug and Darlene Carpenter, Amy Cedargren, Tom Dibling and Dianne Woggon, Bill and Linda Fayerweather, Linda King, Paul and Celena McKenna, and Jim and Ruth Wolfe.
Preview party chairmen Linda Telb and Dr. Deb Skrzynecki were assisted by Theresa and Bob Hoen, Marlene Uhler, and Jean Emery, Garden Tour chairman.
The garden tour was a giant team effort by TDN staff and Friends including Marcia McCreedy, Mona Macksey, Mary Decker, Margaret Doresco, Konni Bostleman, Jano Nolette, Claudia Sundberg, and Lynda Gilbert, Friends President.
Next year, when the Nursery will be 144 yrs. old, the 20th anniversary tour will feature the Old West End, said Pat Scheuer, executive director, who is retiring Sept. 30, 2014. For information, visit www.toledodaynursery.org.
CATAWBA Island Club (CiC) hosted its Commodore's Ball June 14, in honor of Dave Mead and his wife Carol of Catawba Island. Several Toledo area folks, many who are members, attended the event.
UNITED Way of Greater Toledo Leadership on the Lawn event was June 12 just outside the doors of the downtown headquarters. Leadership members are those who donated $1,000 or more annually. The about 175 attendees were treated to food and beverages as The Homewreckers played tunes and the Birds Eye View Circus performed.
