Blade-published history book honored
9/25/2011A book published by The Blade, which depicts Toledo's past in postcards, has been selected as the best work in the independent scholar division of the local history publication awards presented by Bowling Green State University's Center for Archival Collections.
You Will Do Better in Toledo was edited by John R. Husman, retired human resources manager of The Blade, and his wife, Sandy Husman. The book, subtitled, From Frogtown to Glass City, A Toledo Retrospective in Postcards, 1893-1929, features in its pages 300 Toledo-themed postcards from the collection of Ken Levin.
A searchable CD accompanies the volume and includes images of 2,000 historical postcards.
In a letter to the Husmans, Stephen M. Charter, head university archivist, wrote, "The committee felt your book makes a significant contribution to the history of our region by visually chronicling the development of Toledo.
"The historical postcard images are fantastic," Mr. Charter wrote. "The accompanying CD is an added bonus."
An honorable mention in the independent scholar division was awarded to Something for Nothing, Gambling in the Glass City 1910-1952, by Kenneth R. Dickson.
The awards were presented yesterday at the Local History Conference, with the Maumee Valley Historical Society playing host at the Wolcott House and Museum Complex in Maumee.
