A fire near Toledo’s Old West End caused heavy damage to two upper units of a three-story apartment building today.

Fire crews were called at 2:57 p.m. to 418 W. Bancroft St., where fire destroyed the top two apartments.

No injuries were reported and the cause and a damage estimate were not immediately available, said Battalion Chief James Price.

Extra crews were dispatched after initial reports said people may have been trapped inside. Chief Price said the occupants were able to evacuate the building unassisted and no one was trapped.

Wind gusts sent embers into the second-floor apartments, although damage there was not as severe as on the top floor, he said.

The structure, constructed in 1887, is owned by Old West End Properties LLC, according to the Lucas County Auditor’s Office.

American Red Cross volunteer provided food and clothing to two adults living there.

The Red Cross said that in the next few days, volunteers will provide assistance for items such as bedding and support with security deposit or rent.
