ST. LOUIS — Tennessee's bid for a first trip to the Final Four ended in heartbreak.

Battling Michigan State in a taught Midwest Regional final, the sixth-seeded Volunteers came up just short, losing to the Spartans 70-69 on Raymar Morgan's free throw with 1.8 seconds left Sunday.

Tennessee (28-9) made it through a difficult regular season and had its deepest run in the NCAA tournament, reaching the regional finals for the first time.

The Vols had their chances against Michigan State and couldn't come through.

Scotty Hopson missed a free throw that would have put Tennessee up one with 11 seconds left, and the Vols fouled Morgan at the other end. He hit the first free throw, missed the second and J.P. Prince's desperation heave from midcourt came up well short.
