NCAA urges schools to discuss pitfalls of unions

INDIANAPOLIS  — The NCAA has provided school leaders with a set of talking points about the potential for a college athletes’ union.

Some of the topics were pretty standard. The NCAA argues that it wants athletes focused on classwork rather than money and is working on legislation that would allow schools to provide additional scholarship money to cover the full cost-of-attendance.

The NCAA is also urging school leaders to discuss how unions could lead to less money for Olympic sports programs, the potential loss of academic support and career counseling for athletes and possible scholarship reductions.
