BOWLING GREEN — Datrin Guyton was handed a test last Saturday. In the coming weeks, we will see if the Bowling Green State University receiver passed that test.

Guyton, a former Oregon State receiver who came from Copiah Lincoln Junior College, was in uniform on the sidelines as the Falcons took on Miami last Saturday. But Guyton never saw action in BG’s 37-29 victory, despite ranking among the team leaders in passes caught (16) and receiving yards (284) through the first five contests.

After the game, coach Mike Jinks confirmed that Guyton was not injured, and that he would return to action — perhaps as soon as this Saturday against Ohio.

What was the deal with Guyton? Jinks would not say directly. But there are similarities to this situation and the situation with running back Josh Cleveland last year. Cleveland seemed to hit a mid-season “funk” a year ago.

The good news for the Falcons was that Cleveland returned to action with a flourish at season’s end and this season has been a potential game-breaker at running back. If Guyton can return to the field with the same improved focus that Cleveland showed late in 2016, the Falcons’ offense will benefit from having a third major receiving target to mix with Scotty Miller and Teo Redding.
