Wolever pleads not guilty by reason of insanity

A former Toledo fire inspector charged with shooting at an area fire station appeared in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Wednesday where he entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Kevin Wolever, 32, is charged with two counts of improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation and one count each of aggravated arson and felonious assault, for three different incidents. Three of the charges also had gun specifications, including one five-year specification for shooting out of a motor vehicle. The son of retired Fire Chief Mike Wolever, Mr. Wolever faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted.

Judge Linda Jennings referred Mr. Wolever for an evaluation and set a Nov. 10 hearing date. She continued the $300,000 bond set in Toledo Municipal Court.

According to the indictment, Mr. Wolever is charged with the Sept. 24 shooting in which an on-duty firefighter was struck, but not injured, by a ricocheting bullet. The incident occurred about 10:20 p.m. at Station 6 on 642 Starr Ave.

Mr. Wolever is also charged with aggravated arson for allegedly leaving an incendiary device outside Station 18 at 5221 Lewis Ave. on Sept. 22 and on Sept. 21, he is charged with shooting at Station 6 for the first time.
