Arraignment held by video in Sylvania

Bond set at $5M for suspect, 22

Cameo Pettaway, a prisoner in the Lucas County Jail, is arraigned in Sylvania Municipal Court on two counts of murder and one count of aggravated robbery. The 22-year-old man charged with murder in the deaths of a young Springfield Township couple was quiet yesterday as he appeared by video for arraignment in Sylvania Municipal Court.

Cameo Pettaway, facing two counts of murder and one count of aggravated robbery, is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $5 million bond. Mr. Pettaway is the second person to be arrested for the deaths of Johnny Clarke, 21, and Lisa Straub, 20, in Miss Straub's parents' Longacre Lane home Jan. 31.

Judge M. Scott Ramey set bond at $2 million on each murder count and $1 million on the burglary count. Mr. Pettaway, of East Toledo, told the judge he could not afford an attorney and requested a public defender. When asked, Mr. Pettaway told the judge he was not employed.

Judge Ramey granted Mr. Pettaway a public defender and the case was continued to 10 a.m. today.

It did not appear that Mr. Pettaway's family members were at the arraignment yesterday afternoon. Only the family of one victim, Clarke, was there.

Clarke's family sobbed during the brief arraignment and declined to comment afterward.

Clarke's father, who kicked in the door to the home where the couple were staying while Miss Straub's parents were on a Caribbean cruise, found the young couple bound with plastic bags over their heads.

He had gone to the house after receiving a call from a woman who said she heard a struggle on the other end of the line when she was on the phone with one of the victims. Police went to the house a few times and reported nothing appeared to be amiss.

Also accused in the deaths is 24-year-old Samuel Williams, also of East Toledo, who is charged with two counts of aggravated murder.

He pleaded not guilty to those charges as well as to one count each of kidnapping and aggravated burglary.

His trial is scheduled for Jan. 18 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

If convicted, Mr. Williams could face the death penalty. He is in the county jail on a $4.3 million bond.

Mr. Williams and Mr. Pettaway are childhood friends and are still "very close," Mr. Pettaway's mother, Kenyatta Baker, has told The Blade.
