A Toledo man was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Monday to community control, including community service hours and a fine, after admitting he collected and stored hundreds of scrap tires.

Jeremy Goldthwaite, 31, of 4140 South Ave. pleaded guilty to one count of illegal storage of scrap tires. As part of the plea, two additional felony counts of open dumping and illegal transportation of scrap tires as well as misdemeanor failure to ensure legal disposal or storage were dismissed.

Goldthwaite told Judge James Jensen he stored 320 scrap tires in a storage unit at the Around Town self-storage, 1028 S. Holland-Sylvania Rd., between Oct. 18, 2009, and Jan. 19, 2010. His lawyer said it began as a business arrangement, but Goldthwaite got in over his head.

Judge Jensen imposed the five years of community control, including 150 hours of community service, a fine of $2,500, and $623 to the storage facility for unpaid rent.
