HUDSON, Mich. — An Ypsilanti, Mich., man has been charged with first-degree child abuse stemming from injuries to a 1-year-old Hudson boy, who later died at Toledo Children’s Hospital.

The child, LeRoy Beals, was seriously injured about 8:45 p.m. Monday at his Division Street home where his mother’s boyfriend, Timothy Martin, 25, was babysitting. Hudson police said Mr. Martin was arrested Wednesday, and the toddler died that evening.

Preliminary results of an autopsy performed Thursday by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office indicated young Beals died from “complications of nonaccidental head trauma,” said Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a deputy Lucas County coroner.

Mr. Martin is being held in the Lenawee County jail. A funeral service for the young Beals is set for 12:30 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, according to an obituary published in the local newspaper.
