Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Stacy Cook on Monday rejected the claim that Cameo Pettaway was intoxicated and not himself the night he beat up his girlfriend, and sentenced him to six years in prison.

Pettaway, 23, of 922 Mambrino Rd. was acquitted in July of aggravated murder charges in the 2011 suffocation deaths of a young couple in Springfield Township. He was arrested Oct. 14 after assaulting Sarah Rupert, fracturing her left orbital floor and medial orbital wall around her eye.

He pleaded no contest last month to felonious assault.

His attorney, Rebecca West-Estell, asked the court to send him to the Correctional Treatment Facility in Toledo where he could get substance abuse treatment. Judge Cook sent him to prison, citing his lengthy juvenile and adult criminal record.

She noted that domestic violence and assault charges were dropped six times because the victim failed to appear.

This time, the victim appeared in court but asked the court to be lenient with Pettaway.

“I understand there are some points in a person’s relationship where it almost starts to seem normal what happens, and I’m not willing to accept that as an excuse for what you did,” Judge Cook told Pettaway. “You hurt this woman severely.”
