Threats, verbal taunts made to rape victim after Nov. court hearing

Calling his conduct outrageous and inappropriate, a Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge today sentenced a Toledo man to three years in prison for making threats and verbal taunts to a rape victim and court officials after a previous sentencing hearing.

Anthony Mitchell, 39, of 828 Magnolia St., was sent to prison for his conviction on one count of retaliation.

Five others initially charged with aggravated rioting for their roles in a disturbance that followed the Nov. 28 incident were placed on probation or ordered to serve brief jail sentences by Judge Gary Cook.

Sonia Nieto, 25, of 230 E. Weber St., who was convicted of obstructing justice, was ordered to serve 45 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio near Stryker, spend two years on community control, and perform 40 hours of community service.

The other four co-defendants each pleaded no contest to one count of misconduct at an emergency.

Judge Cook ordered both Angel Bowman, 25, of 230 E. Weber St., and Myesha Newton, 20, of 5365 Glenridge Rd., to serve 30 days at CCNO. He also placed them on probation for two years and ordered Ms. Bowman to be screened for mental health and anger management counseling. Ms. Newton was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service.

Judge Cook placed both Markella Lawrence, 30, of 420 Elizabeth St., and Antoine Pernell, 36, of 812 Walbridge St., on probation for two years and ordered them to perform 40 hours of community service.
