Oregon police officer guilty of reckless driving

An Oregon police officer charged with drunken driving has pleaded no contest in Toledo Municipal Court to a reduced charge of reckless operation.

Sgt. Antonio Castillo, 45, of Perrysburg Township, was sentenced Monday to three days in an intervention driving program, fined $200 and court costs, and placed on probation through Oct. 31.

Judge Amy Berling accepted Mr. Castillo's plea to the fourth-degree misdemeanor. An additional charge of failure to observe marked lanes was dismissed.

Mr. Castillo, who was off duty, was arrested about 2:15 a.m. March 17 on Miami Street near the southbound I-75 entrance in East Toledo after a state trooper saw him driving erratically.

Mr. Castillo refused the trooper's request to undergo field sobriety tests and a breath test, resulting in an automatic one-year license suspension. He has since received court approval to drive for work and to attend classes at Lourdes University.

Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre said an agreement has been reached with the officer's bargaining unit, the Oregon Police Command Association, to have an administrative hearing into the incident. A date for that hearing has not been scheduled.
