A convicted sex offender faces life in prison for raping a 2-year-old girl left in his care.

Aubrey Dale Marshall, 57, of 2611 Lagrange St., pleaded guilty Thursday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to two counts of rape before Judge Ruth Ann Franks for the March 30 assaults at the child’s North Toledo home.

Marshall is to be sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years when he is sentenced July 26, although Judge Franks told him repeatedly that she could sentence him to consecutive sentences that would keep him in prison for at least 30 years.

Even then, she said, it would be up to the Ohio Parole Board to determine whether and when he would ever be released.

Marshall, who was convicted in 2003 of sexual conduct with a minor, told the judge when asked what he’d done that he “had sex with a minor.”

“How old was this minor?” the judge asked.

“Two, I think,” Marshall replied.

Lindsay Navarre, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, told the court that the child’s mother took her to the hospital with “extensive” injuries.

The woman who left the child in his care — Connie Elam, 28, of 3321 Maple St. — faces a charge of endangering children.

Her case is set for trial July 22.

As part of a plea agreement, Ms. Navarre said prosecutors are asking that Judge Franks dismiss a charge of failure to register his address with the county sheriff — something Marshall has been required to do since his 2003 conviction.
