BOWLING GREEN — A Michigan burglar who was shot by a Perrysburg police officer during a search for him was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison.

Wood County Common Pleas Judge Alan Mayberry also ordered James Scott Newman, 39, of Grand Blanc, Mich., to pay a total of $1,914 in restitution to the three victims and to Perrysburg Township police.

Newman pleaded guilty last month to two counts each of burglary, disrupting public services, and identity fraud, and one count each of possessing criminal tools, safecracking, tampering with evidence, and obstructing official business. He was shot in the leg Jan. 29 by Perrysburg police Sgt. Jack Otte during a search for him that began after a Perrysburg Township officer spotted him fleeing into a wooded area from a Thompson Road home.
