DEFIANCE — A 29-year-old man arrested Monday and accused of killing a 5-month-old baby is to appear in court today, authorities said.

James L. Cooper of Defiance was charged with murder in the death of the baby, who died Sunday in Toledo Hospital, according to Defiance police. Mr. Cooper was being held without bond on Tuesday at Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio near Stryker pending his appearance in Defiance Municipal Court.

The baby was taken to the hospital on Friday after Defiance police and firefighters responding to a report of a child not breathing found the victim at a Corwin Street address about 7:05 a.m., police said.

Defiance is about 55 miles southwest of Toledo.
