Toledoan indicted in Feb. shooting death of man

A Lucas County grand jury indicted a Toledo man charged in the Feb. 2 shooting death of Michael Macklin, Jr.

Deontay Smith, 24, of 418 Dexter St., was indicted for murder and participating in a criminal gang. The murder charge includes specifications alleging the offense was committed as he discharged a firearm from a motor vehicle and as part of criminal gang activity.

Jeff Lingo, chief of the criminal division for the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, said Mr. Macklin, 20, was driving a vehicle when it was struck by five shots near Greenwood and Walden avenues in East Toledo just after 1 a.m. He died later that morning at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Mr. Smith is being held in the Lucas County jail on $1 million bond.
