A year after the death of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Richard L. Speer, the court’s Chapter 13 trustee has been appointed to the bench.

John P. Gustafson was sworn in April 8 as a U.S. bankruptcy judge for the Northern District of Ohio. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals appointed him to a 14-year term.

Judge Gustafson, who received a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in 1982 and a law degree from Wayne State University in 1985, joins Judge Mary Ann Whipple in handling all bankruptcy cases in the district’s Western Division, which encompasses 21 northwest Ohio counties.

The late Judge Speer died April 3, 2013, after suffering a heart attack while getting into his vehicle after work at the court.
