The first of four men charged in an assault last summer on the University of Toledo campus was convicted Tuesday of reduced charges in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Domenic Hudson, 18, of 2744 Inwood Dr., entered an Alford plea before Judge Linda Jennings to aggravated riot and attempted failure to comply with a police officer’s order for the Aug. 23 confrontation. He had been indicted for felonious assault, failure to comply, obstructing official business, and aggravated riot in the case.

In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit to committing a crime, but concedes evidence is sufficient for a conviction that could result in a more severe sentence.

Hudson, Sheldon Wendel, 21, and Emilio Cloyne, 19, were accused of kicking and punching Joseph Bialecki, 19, of Temperance until he was unconscious after Mr. Bialecki allegedly stabbed their friend, Cody Halka, 17, during a fight. Mr. Cloyne’s case is set for trial Monday, while Mr. Wendel is set for trial May 27, and Mr. Bialecki’s case is set for trial May 12.

Judge Jennings scheduled Hudson’s sentencing for June 11.
