Bond set at $175,000 for Ottawa County man accused of abducting his ex-girlfriend

PORT CLINTON -- An Ottawa County man appeared in court today on an abduction charge after he allegedly drove away from a party with his ex-girlfriend as she tried to get out of the vehicle.

Garret Zunk, 20, of Bay Township faces a third-degree felony stemming from an incident police say occurred on Saturday.

His bond was set at $175,000 today in Ottawa County Municipal Court. Port Clinton attorney Thomas DeBacco said his client is innocent and will post bond today.

Mr. Zunk and an ex-girlfriend were at a party when the two got into a truck together and began to yell, according to a report from the sheriff's office.

The woman tried to get out of the truck, but Mr. Zunk allegedly kept locking the doors to prevent her from leaving. Other people at the party tried to open the vehicle door and break the window but were unsuccessful as the woman screamed for help, the report states.

Mr. Zunk started to move the truck and left quickly, witnesses told deputies.  One person, Chris Williams of Port Clinton, was injured as he attempted to stop the vehicle as it left.

Mr. Williams suffered injuries to his face, shoulder, and head and went to Magruder Hospital, where he was treated and released. He could not tell police if he had been run over by the vehicle or dragged behind it as he tried to help, according to the report.

The woman was later dropped off at her parents’ house by the defendant’s mother, according to the police report. It stated the woman had black and blue marks around her eyes and her face was swollen.

Mr. DeBacco said his client went to the party at the request of the woman, who had texted and invited him and wanted to talk. 

Ottawa County Prosecutor Mark Mulligan said additional charges are possible.
