Man pleads guilty to 8 armed heists

A Toledo man faces up to 100 years in prison for a three-month series of South Toledo robberies in which he demanded money from employees while armed with a gun.

Davon Motley, 26, of 1729 Parkdale Ave., pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to eight counts of aggravated robbery and four firearms specifications. In exchange for his plea, four additional firearms specifications are to be dismissed when he is sentenced June 24 by Judge Myron Duhart.

Motley faces up to 11 years in prison on each aggravated robbery charge and three years in prison for each of the four firearms specifications.

Ian English, an assistant county prosecutor, said Motley admitted to robbing Dollar General, 2857 Airport Hwy., Nov. 15, Dec. 11, and Jan. 11; Family Dollar, 1121 N. Reynolds Rd., Nov, 24; Boost Mobile, 528 S. Reynolds Rd., Dec. 4, Jan. 17, and Jan. 25; and Dollar General, 4400 Heatherdowns Blvd., Jan. 9.

Nearly every time, Mr. English said, Motley wore latex gloves and a nylon mask. He obtained cash in amounts ranging from $70 to $304 in each instance except for the Dec. 4 hold-up at Boost Mobile, where he stole five cellular phones valued at $1,560.

Mr. English said Motley’s crime spree came to an end Jan. 31 when the father of a Boost Mobile employee went to work with his son and followed the suspect after he came to the door wearing gloves and a mask. Mr. English said the worker’s father was able to flag down a passing police cruiser.
