A Toledo man who shot another man in the leg last September was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Linda Jennings ordered Jeremiah “Bud” Jones, 23, of 1106 Waverly Ave. to spend seven years in prison for felonious assault and one year for violating his community control on a 2012 conviction for possession of marijuana.

While Jones’ attorney, Thomas Stebbins, said his client had only shot the victim, Vercell Carter, 26, in the leg as he was getting into a car Sept. 21, Judge Jennings said the offense was very serious.

A 7-year-old child was in the car, she said, and could have been shot as well.
